NONDAS Corfu Holidays

MORE ABOUT CORFU

Corfu is one of the greenest and most lush of the Greek islands and is thickly covered by olive trees and cypresses. Homer, Lawrence Durrell and Gerald Durrell all wrote about it (in wildly different ways!) and it is said to be the setting for Shakespeare's "The Tempest". It is the second largest and most northern of the Ionian islands and has been conquered over the years by numerous invading forces leading to an interesting mix of architecture and traditions from the elegant Italianate buildings of the Liston in Corfu town to the British inspired cricket pitch next to it which is still in use.

There are many beautiful places to see while you are here from the much photographed Mouse Island to the beautiful clover leaf bay of Paleokastritsa and the picturesque fishing harbour of Kassiopi. You could even drive to the top of Mount Pantokrator, the highest mountain on the island. There is also the Achilleon Palace with its famous statue of Achilles and many museums from the largest in Corfu town to the smallest village house museum in the South. If you have children (or even if you don't!) make sure you go down to Aqualand, one of the biggest water parks in Europe with wave pools, multi slides, tubes and tunnels or, for the more sedate, the relaxing lazy river where you can bob around the site at a stately pace in a large inflateable tyre.

Hire a car and go where your fancy takes you; just remember to drive on the right, to breathe in when going through villages, watch out for the potholes, always give way to buses (because they won't give way to you!) and don't rely on the map to be strictly accurate. Watch out too for enterprising local 'businessmen' - this year we were ambushed just outside Paleokastrita and sold a bottle of very lively red wine and some fantastic olive oil, both home-made.

Everywhere you go you will be faced with a staggering choice of restaurants and tavernas. Make sure you try some of the delicious Greek specialities such as the garlic and cucumber Tzatziki dip, deep fried squid rings with lemon juice, baked Feta cheese, aubergine and mince layered Moussaka, tender oven baked lamb Kleftico and beef Stifado with baby onions. Greek drinks are worth trying too; Retsina wine is dry enough to strip woodwork and very much an acquired taste, Ouzo, either with or without lemonade, is addictive and Metaxa brandy is arguably the best possible way to end a meal.
